Description

A series of drawing I'm doing at the Academy of Fine Arts.

*personal moment in*

In the last 3 years I went through an emotional rollercoaster, an my weight reflected it. I gained and then I lost about 15 kg (33 pounds). I always felt good with my body, I didn't really care being "fat" (I was much more unhappy when I was very skinny, I realised it was more a self esteem issue the a weight one), but the overall shape of my face obviously changed a lot. I struggled with recognising my face in the mirror, I wasn't able to undestand and categorize myself in a form. I always looked like a stranger to myself.
Before I used to make a lot of self portraits (mostly because it was a easy way to find a model), my 2010-11 paintings are mostly portraying me, but then I stopped.
So a year ago I made two self portraits in the mirror

and those helped a lot, I was able to see my face for what it was.

But it was at the apex of my weight gain, now I am significantly different, and the more kg I lost the more I struggled.
So I took this "homework" as a tool: discovering myself again.
I made a portrait a week (kind of), and I am aware of the difference between all of them. It's not only the changing pose or technique: I look at these and I see a bunch of different people.
My journey isn't over yet, but I know already that it is an important one. I'm really learning a lot about image and perception.

I think I actually look good in this one xD
